Welfare benefits and debt advice service

Things that happen without warning, such as losing your job, working shorter hours, or splitting up with your partner, can make it hard to keep up your tenancy, pay your rent and enjoy life. The welfare benefits and debt advice service is here to help you with any problems like these.

What is the welfare benefits and debt advice service?

We offer advice and information on whether you could be entitled to benefits and how to claim them. We also offer practical advice on money and budgeting to help solve your financial problems.

How does the service work?

When you sign up for an East Durham Homes tenancy we offer you a free welfare benefit check. We start by completing a questionnaire with you. Next our Welfare Debt Advice Officer will contact you to discuss the benefits you could apply for.

If you’re already a tenant and you have money or benefit problems or fall behind with your rent, any of our staff can refer you to the welfare debt advice officer, who can advise you on managing debt and check that you’re getting all the benefits you’re entitled to.

If you feel the service could help, and you’d like a referral to the welfare debt advice officer, please contact the rents team.
