Mutual exchange service
What is a mutual exchange?
It is where you swap your home with someone else who also wants to swap their home. You may be able to exchange homes with another tenant, even if they have a different landlord, if you are a tenant of:
- East Durham Homes
- any housing association, or
- another council.
A mutual exchange is a way of moving home that may help you avoid having to wait a long time on our housing register.
How can I register for a mutual exchange?
-
You can advertise your property on our on-line exchange system HOMESWAPPER www.HomeSwapper.co.uk. This allows tenants from across the country to advertise and search for an exchange. This is a free service for East Durham Homes tenants.
-
You can complete an application form for rehousing and we will enter your details onto our exchange book. We keep this book in our customer outlets at Peterlee and Murton and at our Head Office so that people can view it. Please note the exchange book only covers the East Durham Homes area. If you are looking to move further afield please use the HOMESWAPPER on line service, www.HomeSwapper.co.uk.
When you have found someone to exchange with
We will ask you and the person you want to exchange with to complete a mutual exchange form with East Durham Homes. You can get one of these from one of our customer outlets in Peterlee and Murton, at our Head Office or by calling our contact centre.
Once we have received both parties' forms, we will arrange to inspect the properties involved in the exchange.
We are not responsible for doing any rechargeable repairs to the property you are moving into. Any repairs needed must be done before you are given permission to exchange.
