Making improvements to your home
Can I make improvements to my home?
Yes, but you must get our written permission first. You are allowed to make improvements like:
- fitting a new kitchen
- fitting a new bathroom suite
- fitting a new gas fire and heating system
- painting the outside of your home
- installing extra electricity sockets
- installing new light fittings
- installing a shower
- fitting a new front door
- putting up a shed or a greenhouse
- putting in new windows
- making a driveway and pavement crossing.
Why do I need permission for improvements?
Because if you move out of your home, you may be able to claim compensation from us for any improvement work you have done.
It will also ensure you get good advice about the work. Many jobs are complicated and some can damage the structure of your home if they aren't done properly, so we can give you advice before you go ahead.
How do I apply for permission?
Just complete a home-improvement application form, available from our customer outlets in Peterlee or Murton.
You can also download a form by clicking on the link below or by contacting us directly.
It will help us if you show us a plan or diagram of the work you are planning.
Once you have completed the form, send it and any plan or drawings to us or hand them in at one of our customer outlets.
