Getting permission to carry out work
What alterations can I do to my property?
You can redecorate the inside of your flat and replace fittings within your property. You must not carry out any structural works or alterations, for example building an extension, removing walls or fitting new windows without getting formal written consent.
You will have difficulties selling your flat if you cannot show this written consent.
Alterations that are carried out without our consent could result in action being taken which could put your home at risk.
How to get permission
To get our permission, you will need to write to us giving as many details as possible about the work you want to carry out. In most cases, we are unlikely to refuse permission, unless the work is likely to affect the safety of the building or cause a nuisance to neighbours.
We may ask one of our inspectors to visit the property to discuss the works with you.
Once consent has been given you will still need to:
- Apply for planning or building regulations
- Apply the rules of the statutory authorities, such as gas, water and electricity companies
- Keep to any conditions we set out when giving permission.
Works must be carried out properly and safely by a qualified person. We may wish to carry out an inspection once the works have been completed.
Important note: Once you have received consent, make sure you keep it in a safe place. You may need to produce this at a later date, particularly if you are selling the property.
