Gas and solid-fuel safety
As well as repairs, by law, we must carry out a safety inspection in your home each year. Your safety inspection is very important, as it will ensure that the appliances in your home are safe.
Every year 30–40 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by heating appliances and flues that have not been properly fitted or maintained.
You can't see it. You can't taste it. You can't even smell it. Carbon monoxide can kill without warning in just a few hours.
We want to ensure that you and your family are safe in your home. Please make sure that you keep your appointment for your annual safety inspection.
Not allowing us into your home to do your safety check is a breach of your tenancy. If you refuse access, we can take you to court and will charge our costs to you, and you could even lose your home.
We will visually inspect tenants own gas appliances for safety. If any defects are noted the appliance will be made safe and the tenant advised of any remedial work. It will then be the responsibility of the tenant to have it repaired at their own expense, by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
All East Durham Homes staff and contractors carry photograph identification cards (ID cards). Always check a persons ID before letting them into your home, if you are unsure please call us on 0800 032 0835.
If you smell gas you should immediately telephone the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Turn off your gas at the meter, do not smoke, use matches or turn electrical switches on or off. Open all doors and windows. National Grid will deal with any report of a gas escape free of charge.
Your safety inspection will be carried out by our repairs and maintenance partner Morrison. This logo will be on their vehicles and uniform. If in doubt ask for identification.
