What is domestic abuse?
Anyone can experience domestic abuse, regardless of their age, race, disability, sexuality or lifestyle.
Domestic abuse can include:
- physical abuse, such as slapping or pushing
- kicking, punching and stabbing, attempted murder or murder
- sexual abuse, such as rape and sex acts without one partner's consent
- emotional or psychological abuse, for example making you afraid; not letting you go out or meet anyone; or being verbally abusive by shouting at you and calling you offensive names
- humiliation, such as taking away your status or self-esteem by making you feel stupid or weak; not allowing friends or relatives to visit or phone; destroying your belongings; threatening legal action such as deportation; or getting custody of your children
- financial abuse, such as withholding money and controlling your bank accounts.
