Anti-social behaviour service

Everyone has the right to live in the way they want, as long as it doesn’t affect other people’s quality of life. This means being tolerant and respecting other people’s reasonable needs and choices.

We are committed to making our communities places where people want to live. For this to be really successful, we need your help.

What is anti-social behaviour?

‘Anti-social behaviour’ (ASB) and ‘neighbour nuisance’ are general terms describing a range of behaviour that can affect and upset other people.
Examples of ASB include criminal acts, loud music, abusive, threatening, intimidating or violent behaviour, racial harassment, drug-dealing, vandalism, graffiti and dumping rubbish.

Who can help me?

East Durham Homes Tenancy Enforcement Unit tackles anti-social behaviour in council tenancies.
The Unit handles day-to-day reports on ASB problems. It also develops plans to tackle ASB and ensures that all council and housing employees are aware of their responsibility for reducing crime and disorder in the community.
If you live in a council house, your area will have its own Tenancy Management Officer (TMO). Your TMO can deal with a wide range of issues that can affect your quality of life.

What does the tenancy agreement say?

Every tenant is responsible for their own behaviour, and the behaviour of the people living with them and visiting them, including children.
The agreement states that you “must not do anything which causes or is likely to cause a nuisance or annoyance”. For a full copy of the agreement, ask at any of our customer outlets or get a copy from our website.
